2. in light of the attacks in paris last week, one self-proclaimed celebrity muslim has this to say. i dig it. can you?

3. i found this because i’ve been thinking about switching up the colours of a few pieces of furniture, but am not willing to reupholster right now and think i might just give it a try. anyone else want to take on this challenge?

4. i really want to learn arabic. let me rephrase that - i want to understand and comprehend the language of my book and i’m thinking this might help. anyone heard of it?

5. all of this. every last bit of advice.

9. discovering the best of instagram is made easy with this beautiful app. i found this gorgeous feed from the uae recently. timely as i am now preparing for our family’s first overseas vacay there. check out these photos from @genyvb.

LIGHT + GOOD SALE

IMG_0550

we’re having a little sale over in the shop today for boxing day.

check out some of my prints and take advantage of this special pricing for the good shot. after this past month of sales it might not come around again for a while. sorry, guys, but it’s the truth.

and i know, you are all shopped out. this past month takes a toll on our wallets and with the new year around the corner, new stuff may not be the prioroty. i get that. i really do. my headspace is more focused on renewal, setting intentions, new beginnings, the bigger picture.

IMG_0542

the thing is… for me at least, art inspires every day.

it’s a thing of beauty to continually admire, remind, and and build off of. so it may not be practically functional, but purchasing a print that speaks to you or reminds you of some good is a good investment if you ask me.

IMG_0549IMG_0546

it’s also nice to shop small! i have only had my shop since may, and am constantly working on it, adding new prints and goods as i go. it’s a labour of love and i can keep doing it only because of you! so thanks to everyone who supported during the holidays and to you in advance. ;)

click here to shop, and if you need advice on what to choose or where to hang with what you’ve already got, i am here to talk! just get at me on my insta or twitter. you can also check out my interiors and gallery pinboards for some major inspiration.

IMG_0543

use code lightbox at checkout to get your savings. and listen, if you live local and want to save out on shipping by picking up your goods from my home studio, feel free. just send me a message in the notes during your cheackout and i will fully refund your shipping charge.

GALLERY WALLS

the ikea frame sale is going on until the end of the day today, so if you have been dreaming of hanging up some art and filling up those bare walls, now is the time to take action. i snagged a few of these to complete a quartet of prints i created for my front hallway. it’s been something i’ve been sitting on for a while now. i’m very much looking forward to finally getting them up.

anyway, if you’re feeling uninspired, take a look through this post from a while back. it will surely get you excited about your future art wall just a little. also, my gallery wall pinboard has some awesome eye candy too.

the last photo, of the bathroom gallery wall is currently my inspo for an art wall install i’m working on. nice, no?

x

i think from this post you can gather a few things from me and my style. one - i like white walls. and two - despite being attracted to black and white interior spaces like, i cannot deny the pull i have towards bolds and brights.

i have done a few gallery walls in the past and typically they were symmetrical and more “planned” out. now however, i am liking the effortless way these walls have their artwork displayed. there’s a more laissez-faire, “put-it-up-already” attitude about them. i have a few spaces in my house that i can think of to fill with art, but priority number one is my kitchen wall behind the banquette. now i’m on the hunt to find, and also create, some beautiful and inspiring pieces to put up.

ROYALS / TAKING PHOTOS

20141216-010929-4169185.jpg

daani’s been picking up the camera a lot these days.

“i just wanna take your picture,” she says.

i’m actually pretty excited about this because she’s getting to a good age to start learning about some of the tools i love to use to express and share. which means we can share in that. and sharing is caring and caring loves people. at least that’s what my niece ayah says.

so she goes into my phone and sets up her shot and clicks away. and she literally does just that. it’s something i teach my students not to do, you know, the quick succession of shots without a steady hand or distinct aim…

just clickclickclickclickclickclick.

but you know what? there’s some real magic here. i love how the viewer sees only snippets. there’s a little mystery. and mood. and it’s kind of abstract.

ha.

she’s got a style all her own. like mama, like baby.

ART/ROOM 05

ART/ROOM / LYOZIN MICHAEL x STYLE AT HOME / tahsin, the good

peach, pink, black, cream.

if i had things my way, my whole house would revolve around these colours. they are bright, fun and not overly girly. right? i said not overly. and whatever man, three girls out of four people means we get final say! haha. sorry mase.

this art is gorgeous. the colours are on point. and to me, that’s a huge part of what makes art good. your strokes may be genius and done just so, but if your colours are off, then sorry chief. you do not get a pass from me. which is the funny thing about art. what may look appealing and incite a wowowowow to my eyes, may totally turn you off.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?

anyway, this is a mixed media piece by russian artist lyozin michael and i really love it.

this space is styled to perfection, perhaps too perfect for me. but it’s nice aspiration/inspiration. i have always wanted open shelving, but never thought it practical with all that cooking splatter. it’s really nice though. perfect for little vignettes and displaying art and well designed items. and obviously all that white. drool on the face.

credits / art : lyozin michael / space : photography by donna griffith, styling by tara ballantyne for style at home

art/room is my pairing of a space with artwork that would look good in it. i have always dreamed of curating peoples homes with artworks and findings, so this is my place to play a little.

IT’S ALL GOING TO BE OK

IT'S ALL GOING TO BE OK / THE DAWN HAS COME / tahsin, the good

إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ

it’s been a just over week since a lamp dimmed in this world and started her journey into the next.

my friend nish was a beautiful soul. a dynamo daughter, sister, wife, mother, teacher, and friend to so many. who three years ago got hit with heartbreaking news of cancer running through her body. since then she’s been fighting the good fight, doing whatever it took to “win” this.

she was a good one. a really good one.

and it’s unfair and upsetting and unsettling to think about all that she has left behind and all that could have been, but the silver lining here is that she’s home. so… it’s ok.

IT'S-OKEVERY SOULD SHALL TASTE DEATH / tahsin, the good

right? they say the moment you are born is the first step in your journey to death. because that’s where we are all headed. to be enveloped in Gods presence more so than now.

home.

and at first it made me so sad to think she was not ready or willing to die; she just wanted to fight to be here with her boys. with her family. talking with my own friends and family, as one needs to do at times like these, opened my eyes to something else. now, i think, when death happens, there is an enlightenment that goes on and you see the bigger picture and you want nothing else but that. i don’t know. and i guess i’ll never really know until it happens to me, but for now, that’s comforting. and something to have faith in.

rest in peace nish. you will be so so missed. see you insha’allah on the other side.

x

ps. please please please do your part in this. register yourself to be a donor, get swabbed, and maybe possibly save a life like the beautiful one we just lost. click here for more info and to order your swab kit online, but i’m telling you it takes almost none of your time and is painless and could yield huge rewards. one match is also running a donor drive at hillcrest mall in richmond hill this saturday november 1st from 10-1pm if you want to come out and do this in person.

SOME THINGS / 2

FRANZ KLINE / tahsin, the good

i’m going to be attending the halal food fest this weekend. i’m pretty excited because 1. i love food and 2. i never made it last year. last year i had just had niyya and while we were planning to go, it just didn’t make sense timing-wise with the little one. so i’m so glad to be going this year to check out what halal food vendors my city and beyond has to offer.

that’s how we muslims roll. we seek out halal food spots so we can get our grub on. we like to eat meat, and the menus at the regular restaurant that doesn’t serve halal meat get cut in half, most times more. seafood just isn’t enough all the time. actually, i’m ok with it. but more times when we eat out, we want the variety. the option to eat everything on the menu if we wanted. its about choice. and like i said, we like meat.

so this fest is in its second year and judging by the turnout last year it will be busy! with good food and a diverse mix of people. i love that. and actually i’m going to be hosting a meet + greet on sunday at the fest, so if you’re planning to attend, please come and say hi! i’d love to meet you. its my first official meet + greet too, so… please come by and say hi. ok?

a few things before you come -

1. check out halalfoodie.com to get your mouth watering. this site has all the reviews you’ll want and need when it comes to halal eating. and,

2. buy your tickets now! you will be sad (and hungry) if you don’t. they are $5/person, 16 and under free.

also, don’t you just love the colours in this franz kline piece. they are soooo beautiful. like oh my god, amazing.
