A++ / A GAME OF STILL CINEMA

passed by this gallery in roncesvalles yesterday and while i took many photos and saw many interesting things, i got stuck here last night while editing and wanted share real quick.

john jones is the artist behind this series, and the thought that he has put into the purpose of the whole thing alone is worth sharing with you. how much time do we take to give reasons for the things we do?

so take a look.

because the art is appealing.

and while you’re at it have a little think.

read more about this exhibit on the autumn gallery website here.

ps. looking at this gallery’s past events, I’m currently hooked. it’s that well curated. kinda wish I got a chance to see all the libraries, the art of conversation, and welcome to flight school.

note. after a little extra digging i realize what is photographed above is not john jones work, instead is the work of ethan tennier-stuart. my bad.

SAVE THE DATE / TRACEABLE

this friday mtv and a slew of other networks will be airing a documentary that takes a look at the way our clothes are being made and the effects it has on many levels. it’s also the day which, two years earlier a garment factory collapsed in bangladesh killing 1100 and injuring many more. the day from which fashion revolution day was born.

traceable explores our connection to the communities impacted by the products we consume.

the documentary is called traceable and comments on the current fast fashion trend that has us overtaken, as well as follows designer laura seigel, toronto-native and parsons-educated, as she travels through india to source and produce her clothing line with a desire for transparency in her methods.

#fightforwhatsright

it’s a project close to me in that one, it was spearheaded, written and directed by my friend and classmate from ryerson, jennifer sharpe. honestly, i’m so proud of this major accomplishment of hers and i haven’t even seen it. the topic alone is worthy of applause as it was something that troubled her and caused her to speak up. #fightforwhatsright. right? she was actually in the middle of filming when the tragedy in bangladesh happened. i’m sure that must have fueled her passion to tell this story even more.

and two, the last few years or so i have not been really been able to turn off the inner voice in my head that keeps saying the cheap price, quick turnaround and abundance of clothes must come at a cost.

i know it does.

correction… we know it does.

there are environmental effects rooted from all the processes, the human effect stemmed from poor labour and working conditions, and the heart and soul effects that is the result of mass consumerism and the wanting of so much stuff.

i’m trying to make more of an effort to consume consciously.

and don’t get me wrong, i still buy things and fall prey to my old ways. old habits die hard, is what they say.

especially when it comes to growing kids, and their tiny clothes that they outgrow every six months or so. but im trying to make more of an effort to consume consciously.

ignorance is bliss for only a short while. we can’t keep the blinder on forever. there’s an accountability and a responsibility that each and very one of us consumers has to take for our fellow humans and earth. (yes. its earth day today. so do it for mama earth!)

listen, i know it’s not the popular thing to say, and its way less fun than that $20 jacket on sale for $7.99, but it’s a really important issue at hand. so save the date and give it a watch. i’ll be on a much-needed and long overdue date with the mister that night, but you can bet your last buck that i’ll be pvr’ing it and taking it in as soon as i possibly can.

watch traceable on mtv, bravo, m3 and e! at 8pm, this friday april 24th.

meet me online to talk about it, ok? oh, and check out this article on jenn and her film, connect with her on facebook and turn your clothes inside out this friday and ask #whomademyclothes? together we can make some headway and be heard.

SOME THINGS / 5

if you missed this reminder on my ig, ill share it again here because it is just that good. no pun intended. it’s something you need to think about regularly. and it’s in no way promoting mediocrity. actually, just the opposite. i think, with this kind of thought process things are easier to do, success is easier to achieve. because it’s one little step at a time.

“so, what if instead of thinking about solving your whole life you just think about adding additional good things. one at a time. just let your pile of good things grow.”

i like that. i really really really really really do. (yes, that song is stuck in my head and i only heard it once today)

my team good.

i drive by this mural on bathurst and dav so often. but i do just that. i drive. this time i was at a red and took this ehh shot. next time you will see me and my team (see above) rocking that wall. perhaps we will find ourselves here as part of the mural tour during janes walk in may. anyone want to join?

terroni’s al salmone pizza was first class when i shared it with friends the other night. but, it as a next day brekkie with an egg came a very close second. very close indeed.

white things - walls, sidewalks, steps, dinnerware, paper, are always on my radar to photograph. even if i have to look up …

or down to find them.

this youth machine graphic is all sorts of yes and my mission operative of late. who’s with me?

how fun is this piece of art? get inspired people.

reminding me to get back on my collage game. all you need are photos, imagination and little bit of glue.

his photos are so amazing. and yes, it has a lot to do with the fact that his subjects are well dressed characters in a the most high-end, sartorially on-point play. they are just so wonderful to look at. and appreciate. but his technical…, his skill level, is right up there with his subjects. so it’s a beautiful marriage of sorts.

just take a look and see.

2015/01/img_0231.png2015/01/img_0232.png

he shoots for clients that run the gamut from barney’s to buro. harper’s bazaar, grazia, glamour, elle, vogue, v - you name it. his website/insta is a go-to destination for an inside/outside look at the daily world of fashion from cities and fashion weeks from around the world. and the kicker. the one thing about him that gets me most pumped? he is self-taught. he did this, built this, worked hard for this and got to where he’s at with consistency, patience and perseverance.

self-taught + self-motivated.

his words. if you don’t know it already, visuals run this town these days. you can start stepping your game up here with what you have or just keep practicing with what you know.

shoot, edit, shoot some more. experiment. learn. grow. create.

CAUSE / SEE THE GOOD X 20x20x20

SEE THE GOOD / 20x20x20 / tahsin, the good

i made my decision on which cause to support with the proceeds from the soup exchange coming up as well as all the other exchanges planned for this year. i mentioned in this post that i wanted to give back and help those who cannot see or have a hard time with their vision. it’s something that affects me on a daily basis (-7.00 and -7.25 anyone?) and with the aid of glasses, regular optometry visits and care that is so readily available here, i can.

i know this is not the case for so many around the world.

so i set out to research various causes in this realm of giving back and in doing so i came across 20x20x20. it’s a charity that aims to restore vision to blind adults and children in very poor and rural areas. you see, without vision there are so many things you just cannot lean into. be it small things like being invited to play or big things like not being able to provide for your family. and without proper life-essentials education, or a place to learn to live with your disability, it becomes so difficult for many of these people to thrive, let alone survive, in their own ways in their lives. “the WHO reports that 60% of children die within 1-2 years of going blind. whether you are 8 years old or 80 years old, in most developing countries they say a blind person is like a “mouth with no hands.”” - 20x20x20

it’s just bleak. and that is no way to live.

this charity has somehow found a “miracle surgery” that takes as little as 15 minutes and costs $300 to perform. it also aims to empower local doctors and nurses with the tech and training to provide these life-changing procedures. so its like a win win win. it just seems like the right fit.

so since the exchange is $11*, i have upped the number of guests to 30 from 25 so that we can collectively provide one person their sight.

to me, that’s huge.

mother teresa, that bad-ass good girl, said, “if you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one.”

FEED ONE > FEED NONE / tahsin, the good

this is me doing what i can with, what i’ve got, where i am. and i hope you will join me and some friends in doing that. the exchange is on january 24th from 1-4 pm. it’s a ladies only thang. sorry, fellas and kids. it’s our time to connect, share, inspire and most importantly nourish ourselves socially and spiritually and obviously, physically. trust me when i say, there will be much simple, colourful deliciousness that will make your tummy full.

you can buy your tickets here. please, if you are planning on coming, get your tickets sooner than later, because the last day to get them is one week from now. and the earlier we sell out, the earlier we can start preparing for you all! and the more prepared we are…well, you know. it’s just so good to be prepared.

thank you with all my heart!

*one dollar from each donation will be going towards admin fees. sorry guys, but i cannot seem to escape that.

IT’S ALL GOING TO BE OK

IT'S ALL GOING TO BE OK / THE DAWN HAS COME / tahsin, the good

إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ

it’s been a just over week since a lamp dimmed in this world and started her journey into the next.

my friend nish was a beautiful soul. a dynamo daughter, sister, wife, mother, teacher, and friend to so many. who three years ago got hit with heartbreaking news of cancer running through her body. since then she’s been fighting the good fight, doing whatever it took to “win” this.

she was a good one. a really good one.

and it’s unfair and upsetting and unsettling to think about all that she has left behind and all that could have been, but the silver lining here is that she’s home. so… it’s ok.

IT'S-OKEVERY SOULD SHALL TASTE DEATH / tahsin, the good

right? they say the moment you are born is the first step in your journey to death. because that’s where we are all headed. to be enveloped in Gods presence more so than now.

home.

and at first it made me so sad to think she was not ready or willing to die; she just wanted to fight to be here with her boys. with her family. talking with my own friends and family, as one needs to do at times like these, opened my eyes to something else. now, i think, when death happens, there is an enlightenment that goes on and you see the bigger picture and you want nothing else but that. i don’t know. and i guess i’ll never really know until it happens to me, but for now, that’s comforting. and something to have faith in.

rest in peace nish. you will be so so missed. see you insha’allah on the other side.

x

ps. please please please do your part in this. register yourself to be a donor, get swabbed, and maybe possibly save a life like the beautiful one we just lost. click here for more info and to order your swab kit online, but i’m telling you it takes almost none of your time and is painless and could yield huge rewards. one match is also running a donor drive at hillcrest mall in richmond hill this saturday november 1st from 10-1pm if you want to come out and do this in person.
