SOME THINGS / 6

1. my phones screen saver of late. read it how you want to. love yourself so you can love others well. or love others so you can get love back.

2. empty pools. there’s something about the surrounding colours, angular lines and cavernous space that appeals to me so.

3. i have this thing with shadows. shall i hashtag that?

4. posted this on instagram the other day and i think it deserves a repost here. it’s a good month islamically to give as well, so it’s a nice simple reminder to myself to give more and more. and iA the riches will follow.

5. last week i was living at lowes. this week i’m praying for seedlings (grass seedlings) to sprout. should i just bail on this plan and opt for a fast growing ground cover? this post from a lazy toronto environmentalist (his words, not mine) are really making me think twice.

6. niyya got a new dolly from her dadi for her birthday a few weeks back. and at first glance thought, “cool, i’ll just go and exchange it for a darker haired doll.” you know, one that looks more like us. but then, as i got to thinking, changed my mind about that completely. the point of a baby dolly is to love and care for someone other than yourself. and i thought, why not love and care for a blonde haired blue eyed baby? even though she doesn’t look like us she is still one of us. in the human sense. right? so baby ina is here to stay and we all love her so.

7. one of many likes on instagram this week courtesy of u_issa.

8. there’s a new path i discovered in my forest the other day and those 6am walks in there with the sound of my thoughts, breath and the leaves on the trees are just the best.

9. finally read thru mr. steve jobs commencement address for the graduates of stanford from a few years ago. wow, there’s a lot of good insight in there. click to read the speech in its entirety, or if you’re a mac user and into a hunt, find it tucked away in the hard drive of your computer.

10. christina norberg art is nice. her work explores places “where everything intersects. where everything feels right.” my kinda girl.

THANK GOD FOR MAY

thank god for may.

for so many reasons. but, one of which is easy to see. just look outside - the sun is warm and the trees are starting to bloom.

finally.

yes, those are green leaves sprouting on those previously bare branches. and they’ve been bare for so long we take this miraculous sign of renewal for granted i think. or maybe not, maybe you do regularly appreciate the beauty that lies with spring.

it’s amazing how quickly things can change at this time.

i’ve been thinking about it a lot lately and have come to realize that for me may is the season of newness and change. we like to say and think and hope that march brings that about because technically the calendar says so. but, this year march was miserable. well, it was in my hood at least. and i can rarely get my act together for the new year on jan 1. technicality again. i love the idea of nowruz. the new day. it’s an iranian celebration for the new year which happens in spring. again, the timing of it has to do with dates and technicalities, etc. and i think if you’re catching my drift i go more with how i feel vs what i’m told to feel. and timing is everything with this.

timing is everything.

celebrating this time, whenever you choose to do it, is so nice. it’s a remembrance of the dominion of god. an appreciation of life and another chance at awakening and growth. like i said, there is so much beauty that lies with spring.

this time took on a more special meaning a few years back the arrival of my second baby. i feel like i really noticed things more. i went into the hospital and it was bare and came out and everything was alive! including, of course, my sweet sweet niyya. among so many other things, she has brought so much beauty and richness to my life, a fulfillment of family goals for mase and a lifelong partner in fun and sisterhood for daaniya. so every year this time brings about these emotions in me and i cant help but feel thankful for may.

create each day anew.

this lightness in my mood has got me to thinking about holding on to this feeling year round. (because lord knows it’s hard to feel this way amidst the cold and dead of winter.) “create each day anew”, right? as morihei ueshiba said so simply, we are given life every morning to start the day fresh and new regardless of the season. its been a gift to us and and its our choice to create it that way.

in a few days those trees will be lush. and this visual moment of transformation will gone. so take a look around. soak it all up and store what you can within. you can guarantee that i’ll be doing my best to do the very same.

oh and, since we’re talking about trees in bloom, check this vid, if you haven’t already. prince ea knows whats up.

and check the blog tomorrow for photos on how we celebrated #niniturnstwo.

SOME THINGS / 5

if you missed this reminder on my ig, ill share it again here because it is just that good. no pun intended. it’s something you need to think about regularly. and it’s in no way promoting mediocrity. actually, just the opposite. i think, with this kind of thought process things are easier to do, success is easier to achieve. because it’s one little step at a time.

“so, what if instead of thinking about solving your whole life you just think about adding additional good things. one at a time. just let your pile of good things grow.”

i like that. i really really really really really do. (yes, that song is stuck in my head and i only heard it once today)

my team good.

i drive by this mural on bathurst and dav so often. but i do just that. i drive. this time i was at a red and took this ehh shot. next time you will see me and my team (see above) rocking that wall. perhaps we will find ourselves here as part of the mural tour during janes walk in may. anyone want to join?

terroni’s al salmone pizza was first class when i shared it with friends the other night. but, it as a next day brekkie with an egg came a very close second. very close indeed.

white things - walls, sidewalks, steps, dinnerware, paper, are always on my radar to photograph. even if i have to look up …

or down to find them.

this youth machine graphic is all sorts of yes and my mission operative of late. who’s with me?

how fun is this piece of art? get inspired people.

reminding me to get back on my collage game. all you need are photos, imagination and little bit of glue.

it’s because of this that i love photography so much. movement, joy, line, colour, culture. all in one go. amazing. thanks scott for being such a captive photographer.

lots of love to you,

tahs
