a portrait of my daughters, once a week, every week, in 2014.”

daaniya : cheeky, sneaky, and so so so loveable.
niyya : big bright eyes and a whole lot of mess!

there’s this movement going around that i want to talk about. it’s called no new friends. seriously, it’s a song, and a major player hashtag, and i’m so not down for that. i love my friends. don’t get me wrong. i love them so much, they are such an encouragement and support to me, but if i closed the door to new then i would really be missing out. i think. i have met some incredible people over the years due to circumstance (in-laws turn into sisters quick and sisters are friends in my book,) situation (being a mama will afford a lot of things on common regardless of anything else,) location (creative moving into the area? sure, let’s hang,) etc. and i am so thankful for them. so so thankful. recently a new friend, who instantly became like an old friend (where have you been all my life!), shed some light on this. she told me that she had filled her quota. that she didn’t have much time to give to anyone new. and i get that. as a friend, i want to be emotionally and physically available to spend time and develop my friendships. it’s a necessary part of the process. the practice. the dreamer in me is also going to believe that these no-new-frienders are just so fulfilled and happy with their friendships that it’s just their way of saying “i love my team.” anyway, i love my team, but i will always keep my heart open for new people to cross paths with and to enter into a friendship with.

and this is a gem i’ll try to teach my girls.

“make new friends, but keep the old. one is silver and the other’s gold.” - brownies theme song
