when i was growing up my mom used to make these every so often. we would look forward to them because they were warm, flaky and filled with deliciousness. thankfully for my mom they were fairly healthy and quick to make.
the other day i had my niece over for a play date with daani and thought i would bring back this food gem for our lunch. it’s so simple, i made a version of this with a big salad for a quick pre-parenting class dinner in under 30 mintues.
so what is it you ask? i don’t know if they have a formal name, ill have to ask my mom about that, but they are made from pillsbury crescent rolls you find in the fridge section near the butter. and basically, instead of rolling the little triangles into the recommended crescent rolls we just place them into a greased muffin pan and fill with a nice mish-mash of things.
when my mom used to make them she would fill them with tuna, cheddar cheese, chopped celery, and chopped egg. simple and yum. when i made it with my niece i didn’t have tuna in the house! so i chopped up some salami and added avocado instead of the egg. this is what i mean by a mish-mash. really, anything goes. maybe a simple rule to follow, at a minimum, is this - a protein, a cheese, a crunchy veg and something creamy. you can always add more ingredients if you want!
let’s brainstorm some yummy combos, shall we:
- shredded roast beef, havarti, red onion and whole grain dijon mayo
- chopped grilled chicken, monterrey jack, orange bell peppers and avocado
- salmon, old cheddar, jalapeno and jerk mayo.
the list could go on and on. it’s the combination of the different textures and flavours that makes this fun. it’s a great go-to dinner on busy nights and works best with leftovers! also, they are perfectly sized and portioned for little toddler hands and bellies! see below for a more formal recipe with baking instructions.
savoury stuffed dinner rolls
what you’ll need is…
- 2 packages of pillsbury crescent rolls, regular or whole grain
- a combination of chopped protein, grated cheese, chopped crunchy vegetable and something creamy for the filling, see above for ideas.
- salt
- pepper
and all you have to do is…
- pre-heat the oven to 375°.
- mix your ingredients for the filling together in big bowl. ensure that the something creamy is coating the rest of the ingredients.
- season to taste with salt and pepper.
- grease a regular sized muffin pan and line each with one triangle of pillsbury dough.
- fill the dough with a generous tablespoon full of the filling.
- close the roll, folding the dough over itself. there is no science to this just flap over and move on!
- bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes.
- when done, remove from the oven and pop each roll out of the pan onto a cooling rack.
enjoy! and tell me, what are you eating for dinner tonight?
